Shrink Plastic Fridge Magnets

Create these great fridge magnets from shrink plastic and a simple magnet. A great art and craft project which is great fun to do, for adults and kids alike.

Materials Required

You will need some shrink plastic (The frosted version is probably best for children it can be drawn on and coloured with pencil crayons or felt tip pens) Some magnets, PVA Glue, Pens and Pens for colouring. To shrink you will need an oven, tin foil, baki

Design your magnet

PREHEAT THE OVEN TO 170C (350F)

Simply draw your design onto the frosted side of the shrink plastic. Remember the shrink plastic will shrink to approx seven times its original size. A quarter of a sheet is ideal. Try not to make it too complicated a simple design will be much easier to cut out and remember it will shrink and you will need to fix a magnet to the back.

Colour it in

Colour your magnet in, using colouring pencils or felt tip pens. The Berol Colour Broad or Berol Colour Fine are ideal for this.

Cut it out

Cut it leaving approx 3mm of border around the edge. The X-Cut scissors are ideal for this.

Shrink It

Place the Shrinkable on a foil lined baking tray. And place in the pre-heated oven for a few minutes. If you are able to watch it it will start to curl (do not be alarmed) after it has curled it will straighten when it has straightened it is done. Take straight out of the oven a place on a work surface and whilst still warm press and old book or table mat on it to completly flatten. If it is cold do not try to flatten or it will break, simply place back in oven to warm again

Fix The Magnet

Place a blob of glue on one side of the magnet and fix to the centre of the frosted side of the shrinkable. Allow to dry for a couple of hours. Use the same technique to create badges and key rings.
